I grew up in an Italian American family where Sunday was sacred! All of the family would gather and my Mom or Nanny would cook all day and throw the spoon at me when I would dunk the bread in the sauce! My cousins and I would fight over the knot on the mozzarella and at 6 years old I would be the first person to hop over the table for anchovies, calamari and prosciutto. My friends at school liked pasta with ketchup and chicken tenders while I was requesting mortadella from the lunch ladies.
As I've gotten older the Sunday dinners have been replaced by takeout or dinners out and this morning I woke up and wanted to recreate the dinners I had from when I was 6. It wasn't really about the food but more about the ritual and that's hard to replicate especially when your family now lives in Long Island and your kitchen is tiny! My husband suggested Sorriso in Astoria.
When I arrived the line was out the door and I was immediately overwhelmed by all the choices. It was amazing and I felt like I was in my Nanny's kitchen in Bensonhurst. The line moved fast and everyone that worked there was so nice but there was 1 guy I wanted to speak with specifically. He never stopped smiling and it put me in a good mood and I know he would be patient while I made all of my choices.
I had made the right choice and he helped me pick everything perfect to replicate those Sunday dinners from when I was little. Artichokes, fresh mozzarella, meatballs, fresh semolina bread, rice balls, prosciutto balls. The list goes on and on. The mans name was Frank and his spirit was contagious and I felt like I was talking to family!
I am home right now and my husband and I are having dinner and the food is perfection but more than that it's the love that they put into this business. It feels like home! I feel like I'm in a room with 20 family members fighting over the last piece of bread and laughing until my stomach hurts.
I cannot say enough great things about this place and I will be back every time I have a Traditional Sunday Dinner or even just Italian food at home.
You won't find this at Whole Foods or your local Grocery store chain, it's way more than that. As I sit in my apartment smelling the sauce on the stove Sorriso has reminded me why food like this is so special, it's a way of connecting with your roots, family, and special times.
I will see you next Sunday Frank! Thanks a million for making my Sunday so special! -

I love to support these guys 'cuz I live nearby, they are very nice, and you can tell proud of their store and the food they make and sell.
A lot of homemade stuff. They make their own soppressatas and let you try them
Bread from parisi bakery
Giant tins of partanna olive oil - my fave - so good
Lots of imported goodies
Nice helpful staff
It's a small store so fyi
Check dates on groceries
Cash only (if you order a sandwich through yelp/grub hub you can pay by cc but it costs more)
I don't eat hero's often but when I do this is my place. But last time few times I got a sandwich there - 1 time bread was stale - another time I got a sandwich there is what disappointing. It was like empty. Barely any lettuce or tomato. Barely any meat. When I crave a hero I crave big full sandwich almost overflowing w/ goodness. Idk what happened. -

Great old school Italian Deli, looks like a one man show.
I ordered an Italian combo and he set off to work. He laid down some meats and asked about cheese. I was thinking provolone, but asked for guidance. He pointed to a tray on the counter and said I made that mozzarella a couple hours ago.
Sold!
Some oil, vinegar, a little mayo and I was set. Or so I thought.
Hot peppers he suggested...
Why not!!!
$10 was the price.
Cut in half, ready to go I went home with my prize. Not something I would or could eat everyday, but what a nitrate-laden feast it was! -

When it comes to Sorriso, what's not to love? If anything, I wish I lived next door so I could come here daily to indulge in everything they have to offer. It is one of Astoria's and perhaps the borough's finest Italian specialties store. They have old school charm, an incredibly friendly staff, and fantastic food.

On my first day living in Astoria, I walked past this place and got excited that there was a real Italian deli so close to my new place. I proceeded to not go in for 4 months.
Man, was that a mistake! This place is AWESOME. The sandwiches are all so amazing (my favorites are the Winnie the Pooh and Godfather), the meats are delicious and fresh, prepared food is fantastic, and the guys behind the counter are so friendly and accommodating.
